PopLiFe

Popular culture, or pop culture, (literally: "the culture of the people") consists of widespread cultural elements in any given society. Such elements are perpetuated through that society's vernacular language or an established lingua franca. It comprises the daily interactions, needs and desires and cultural 'moments' that make up the everyday lives of the mainstream. It can include any number of practices, including those pertaining to cooking, clothing, consumption, mass media and the many facets of entertainment such as sports and literature. (Compare meme.) Popular culture often contrasts with a more exclusive, even elitist "high culture."

Just Plain Ol' Gossip

Truly I am going to get around to writing that OJ Simpson Poplife column and his bereft eyes stare at me from the side panel of this column, accusing and judging most harshly, every time I write about something else.  Leave it to the weird and wacky entertainment world to continue giving me a substantial cud to chew.

I have a folder on my desktop that has had about 5 wonderful OJ websites bookmarked into it, both pro (substantially more difficult to find) and anti-OJ.  Every month, as I am reading through various sites I like to visit, I come upon so many things that I want to share with you that the folder ends up bursting at the seams before OJ even stands a chance.   In fact, there is such a huge bunch of interesting stuff to talk about this month, I'm just going to keep on going for page after page after page until we just fall back exhausted and drained from all of our gossiping.  So here we go:

As this video pieces from www.youtube.com clearly shows, you just don't want to whoop up on "Twisted Sister's" Dee Snyder from behind or it will be YOUR ASS:

It has been announced that cinematic heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson will join forces to create a series of movies based on The Adventures of Tintin, a Belgian comic book series that later became a cartoon series.  Tintin is the creation of Georges Remi, who wrote under the pen name of "Herge" and was first introduced in 1929 as a children's supplement to a Belgian newspaper.

DreamWorks studio announced that Spielberg and Jackson have chosen three specific Tintin stories to develop into movies and will film them back to back.  Says Herge's widow, Fanny Rodwell, "We are delighted that after so many years a dream team for Tintin is finally in place.  We couldn't think of a better way to honor Herge's legacy than this announcement within days of the 100th anniversary of his birth - May 22, 1907. It is also a special honor for us to be associated with these exceptional, creative filmmakers who have our full confidence as they bring Tintin to his biggest adventures on the biggest screens. Herge himself once said, 'I consider my stories as movies.' How prophetic.  Rodwell was married to Herge when he died in 1983 and is now the President of the Herge Studios in Brussels, Belgium.

If you are a fan of the Playstation 2 video game "Guitar Hero," get ready to rock with the bands of the 80's.  Officially confirmed for release on July 17th, "Guitar Hero:  Rocks the 80's" will delve into hair bands, heavy metal, punk and new wave for a total of 30 new tracks.  Included will be:

"I Wanna Rock" (Twisted Sister - Stay out of Dee's way if you know what's good for you) (original recording)
"I Ran" (Flock Of Seagulls) (original recording)
"Round And Round" (Ratt)
"I Want Candy" (Bow Wow Wow)
"Metal Health" (Quiet Riot)
"Holy Diver" (Dio) and
"Heat Of The Moment" (Asia)

Says Dusty Welch, Head of Publishing at RedOctane, "The 80s features an amazing variety of rock genres from hair metal to punk to new wave, and our dedicated Guitar Hero fans will definitely appreciate the opportunity to play all the new and exciting content we've added.  As we delve deeper into the history of rock, we'll continue to offer a fresh experience and even more explosive tracks with the Guitar Hero franchise."

Well, says Katrina of Eye on Soaps, "For those about to wail, we salute you."

Not only is it news that Rob Zombie, rocker and roller and now filmmaker after finding a strong cult success with his movie, "The Devil's Rejects," is taking over the "Halloween" (Michael Myers, etc) series of movies, but now cometh the word that Malcolm McDowell ("Caligula," "A Clockwork Orange" and "Time After Time") will take over the role of Dr Loomis for a minimum of three movies.

McDowell says that he has never seen any of the previous seven or so "Halloween" movies, but upon hearing such things, Zombie told him to specifically not watch them because he's basically reinventing the series.  He says, "It's a new look, it's a reinvention of it and he is completely different, my Loomis, I presume. So I guess there will be some people that will be sort of disappointed if they think I'm just going to copy [Donald Pleasence] because I'm not."  Pleasance played Dr Loomis in the original movie series.  Halloween will come to theaters on August 31st.

Speaking of zombies... ick, eek, ich:

If that tattoo is "in loving memory" of the poor girl cheesing it up in the photo, the artist must be rendering their impression of what she'd look like if she rose from the grave as a zombie and stalked him.  How about a nice heart with some ribbons around it next time, Sparky?

Have you been wondering what will be renewed, what will be chucked and what pilots are in the offing for the network Fall season?  Wonder no more because here they are, as of the info we have at the time of this posting.

Well THAT's a magical pair!  After meeting last weekend at the VH1 Rock Honors show, Cameron Diaz and street magician, Cris Angel, hit the town together and were seen by many having a grand ol' time!

We're getting a new Mummy Mommy.  Maria Bello (left) will replace Rachel Weisz (right) in the upcoming third installment to "The Mummy" movie series.  Bello will co-star with Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh in the Rob Cohen-directed film for Universal Pictures when she takes over the role of Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell, wife of Brendan Fraser's charater.  Luke Ford will play the now grown son of the two as the family explores the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas, where they battle a shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor (Li) cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).  The Mummy 3 is set to release in 2008.

A religious icon, the Reverend Jerry Falwell, was found dead in his office today of an apparent heart attack.  *sigh*  That's probably the fault of the Pagans and the gays as well.  Maybe we should check in with Oral Roberts and ask to be sure.  Personally, the world feels a little cleaner to me without yet another person to point fingers, encourage discrimination and breed hatred in our nation in the name of The Almighty.  I've been praying for Rev Falwell for many, many  years and I hope God sees fit to forgive him for his misguided and unloving ways and will allow him into Heaven anyway... after a stern lecture and a lot of deprogramming.  I'm just sayin'...

Anyway...
